An announcement was made in Full Council by Labour leader Anne Western about 'Challenge Derbyshire' which she claimed as a new concept of invest to save.
Andrew Lewer Leader of the Conservative Group said
"Invest to save is nothing new at Derbyshire County Council. It has been a key plank of how we delivered excellent services whilst achieving savings getting towards £100m."
Procurement, which Labour are also claiming is an area they have innovated was another area where the Conservatives had achieved excellent savings by reviewing across the board how hundreds of millions of pounds worth of procurement was done each year.
Deputy Leader of the Conservative Group Cllr Simon Spencer
"We reviewed procurement after we had learnt that it had not changed for most of the 28 years prior to 2009. So I'm pleased that they've recognised that our changes will deliver savings."
Cllr Mike Longden added
"It's pleasing to see Labour trying to be innovative but it's just a shame they couldn't give credit where it is due. However, I'm not sure this administration is up to delivering this if they've failed to recognise the authority has already been doing this. Or is Labour trying to reinvent the wheel? Perhaps we should call this scheme 'Challenge Anne'?"
