Work starts on Loscoe multi-use games area
Charles Hill Recreation Ground in Loscoe, will be transformed by the installation of a multi-use games area (MUGA) which will offer all-weather use for a range of sports, including wheelchair-friendly activities.
Work has just begun on creating the new facility on Flamstead Avenue, which is being funded by Amber Valley Borough Council, Derbyshire County Council, Amber Valley CVS – via a grant from the Postcode Local Trust – and Charles Hill Community Interest Company (CIC). It is expected that work will be complete by the end of March.
The MUGA will provide a hard surfaced 22m x 11m tarmac court with two goal ends for football, cricket and basketball sports, available for all-weather use throughout the year.
A new hard-standing path will also be installed as part of the development to provide pedestrian and maintenance vehicle access to the new facility. The project will provide a safe, purpose-built space for children, adults and young people to learn and play sports together. Amber Valley Borough Council is managing the installation and will be responsible for ongoing maintenance.
The MUGA provides level-access facilities so can be utilised by individuals in a wheelchair who may wish to participate in wheelchair-friendly sports. The flat hard-surfaced area will also allow other sports activities, such as circuit training, to take place.
Commented Amber Valley Borough Council’s portfolio holder for environment, Cllr Chris Short: “Providing opportunities for positive, locally-based activity, this MUGA could be beneficial in reducing anti-social behaviour in the area. The site is already popular with the local community but this addition will greatly enhance its attraction to users of all ages.”
